Terminology for Beginners

If you are new to Kyokushin, it may seem difficult to understand what’s going on. But don’t worry, everyone started out feeling exactly the same and it won’t take long for it to all fall into place.

Here are a few of the basic terms to get you started. Concentrate on mastering these in the beginning…

Levels of the Body
Gedan – Lower level of the body; groin and below
Chudan – Middle level of the body; torso
Jodan – Upper level of the body; Neck and above

Weapons – Hands
Seiken – Forefist
Uraken – Backfist
Shuto – Knife Hand

Weapons – Legs and Feet
Chusoku Ball of foot
Haisoku – Instep
Kakato – Heel
Sokuto – Foot edge
Hiza – Knee

Basic Stances
Fudo (Yoi) Dachi – Prepared/Ready Stance
Sanchin Dachi – Three Battles Stance
Shizentai – Normal Fighting Stance
Zenkutsu Dachi – Forward Leaning Stance

Basic Techniques
Tsuki – Punch (thrust)
Uchi – Strike
Uke – Block
Geri – Kick
