We will also be meeting up at the Normanby Hotel from 6pm for some steak, real drinks and some funny karate stories no doubt!
Everyone is welcome to train this Saturday even if you are not grading. It will be great to have a strong numbered class to finish the year off!
07.12.09 - Final Training of 2009 and Start 2010
The final day of training for 2009 at the Brisbane dojo will be Saturday December 19th. This is the Summer Grading however everyone is welcome to join in and train. The training/grading will start at 8:30am. It should be a hot one, so make sure you bring plenty to drink. Let's make it a great session to finish off 2009!!
We will be having a end of year gathering on the Saturday night after grading for those who are interested. Details to come!
After a well earned rest the first training session back for 2009 will be Wednesday January 6th.
02.12.09 - A weekend of cool breezes, picturesque mountains, big bugs and 10 hours of karate
Congratulations to all those who attended the camp over the weekend. We managed to fit in 10 hours of solid training over the one and a half days we spent up there. As always we started the first morning with a quick yoga stretch (Salute to the sun) and then off for a short run to the NSW border and back to camp for basics. This was followed by a session on moving basics, lunch and then an afternoon of kata and self defence.
All those who attended (including all black belts) learnt a new kata and we also spent time working on kata we already know.
Sunday was the traditional morning run to the Natural Arch and then back to work on the new kata. I am pleased to announce we didn’t lose anyone on the trek to the waterfall (7km round trip) and is still a special place to visit.
We finished the camp with some fight training and sparring and then a nice relaxing dip in the pool.
The nights were hot with lots of bugs but sleeping after 6 hours of training was not a problem. The feedback that I have received so far has been very positive so hopefully next year with more warning we will get more attendees. No once leaves disappointed!!!
Next up for the Brisbane dojo is the grading – December 19th.

24.11.09 - CAMP – Don’t forget sleeping gear
With just 4 days to go please be aware of what you need to bring with you. Nothing worse than being stuck in a camp site and forgetting something.
You need to bring your own sleeping blanket or fitted sheet and blankets, a pillow, toiletries, sun screen. It also gets quite cool at night so some warm clothes are recommended.

Please see below more information from Camp Bornhoffen on what to bring.
What to Bring (PDF)
22.11.09 - 41st All Japan Results
1st - Tanaka Kentaro
2nd - Alejandaro Navarro
3rd - Akaishi Makoto
4th - Kidachi Hiroyuki
5th - Darmen Sadovokasov
6th - Beppu Yoshitatus
7th - Mori Zenjuro
8th - Eduardo Tanaka
Brisbane dojo wishes to congratulate the 41st All Japan Open Karate Tournament champion, Tanaka Kentaro. The semi finals were Tanaka vs Kodachi and Akaishi vs Navarro with both Tanaka and Navarro getting through to the final. The final seeing Navarro lose with penatly for face punches - perhaps a unlucky afternoon for Navarro with an excellent display of his fighting skill over the past 2 days.
As for Sempai Steven, he fought well against Hiroki Kobayshi but was not lucky enough to get the judges decsision. However making it to the top 32 of the All Japan is agreat achievement for Steven and we are really excited about his next few years leading into the 2011 World Tournament.
22.11.09 - Go Sempai Steven!!
An update on the 41st All Japan Open Karate Tournament...
Sempai Steven has won through his first 2 rounds yesterday to now be in the top 32 for the final day today. Steven will fight against Hiroki Kobayashi in the 3rd round today. Hiroki Kobayashi is 2009 champion of All Kanto tournament and had fought strong in the 26th All Japan Weight Category tournament leading to his selection in this years All Japan Open.
Also through to the final day in the same block is Kentaro Tanaka - all going as expected Sempai Steven should meet Tanaka in the semi-finals. Coming through strong on the other blocks are Navarro, Tanaka, Makato & Zenjuro.
Go Sempai Steven!
21.11.09 - Hot weather and training
Just a reminder to make sure that you bring plenty of fluid to training with you as we are starting to come into summer now.
Something also to remember is what Sensei Mark said about rehydration - it doesn't just stop when finish karate training - you need to be rehydrating for at least another 2 hours after the end of the class.
If you have any questions about how to handle the hot weather please talk to one of the senseis or your sempais at training next.
19.11.09 - Good luck to Sempai Steven!!

Sempai Steven with Sensei Dolph
This weekend will see Sempai Steven Cujic from the Sydney dojo competing in the 41st All Japan Open Karate Tournament in Japan.
Sempai Steven has been selected as seeded fighter in block D! A great achievement for Steven and Australian Kyokushin. It has been some time since the last time Australia has been represented in the All Japan Open Weight Tournament now showing that Australian fighters are now moving back up the rankings within the International Karate Organisation Kyokushinkaikan!
Brisbane Dojo wishes Sempai Steven the best of luck for the tournament
17.11.09 - Not too late for the Camp!
If you are thinking about the Camp and have missed the due date please contact Sensei Dom as it is not too late to get your entry in. Please either email Sensei Dominic Hopkins or phone or contact him at the club as soon as possible so you don't miss out on great weekend of Kyokushin Karate!
16.11.09 - T-Shirt Pre-Orders
The t-shirt designs are now final. Below is the shot of the back of the shirt in Grey and White. The front of the shirt has the Kyokushin Kanji on it. The Japanese writing on the rear reads the same as the English above it.
There are now pre-order forms in the dojo and sample shirts to try on for your sizing. We will offer mens fit and ladies fit shirts. Grey and White are the confirmed colours but we are also making available another couple of colours - Blue and Green.
Can't confirm those colours yet it as it will come down to the numbers on them - however you can put one of those colours as your prefered choice on the pre-order form and then have either Grey or White as a backup colour.
The cost for the shirts are $30 each. I have tried to get a better quality shirt rather than cheaping out. More details are in the dojo!
If you can't get into the dojo for the pre-order or to try on shirts then please email Kyokushin Brisbane Webmaster with your pre-order - or wait for stock to come in.
If you want to ensure you get your size etc please make sure you pre-order

* Please note the final print may not be exactly as pictured

3.11.09 - Brisbane dojo makes a comeback at Nationals
As you know the Nationals was held in Gymea NSW last Sunday. We had 6 fighters all up. Overall it was a sensational result.
Lets start with our new Costa Rican visitor – Carlos Castro who won the heavy weight division. He fought really well and very smart to win this match. The highlight of the day being his win against 6 times Aust champion – Simon Kennedy. For those who know Simon (he has trained at the Brisbane dojo a few times) he is a very strong fighter. Simon has fought in several international tournaments and I have personally assisted in his training and I can say he is without doubt, one of the best fighters that Aust has produced. So a huge congratulations to Carlos on taking out the Heavy weight division in front of a hostile crowd.
Peter Chiricosta took out the light weight title in straight wins. Peter had a one match against last years champion and once again totally overpowered and controlled his opponent. He stuck with his plan and due to his extremely high level of fitness was able to dominate each round with some very effective combinations. Well done Peter and look out light weights around the world.
Luke Leonard fought as the lightest member on the heavy weight division. In an extremely impressive performance stuck with his strategy and used his counter fighting skills really well. He finished each round with strong combinations going forward. Luke was eventually beaten by Simon Kennedy in a very close bout. It’s the luck of the draw – but Luke is improving with each and every fight.
Big Shaunnie (Shaune Ofarrell) fought in the super heavy weight division and was beaten by a larger opponent. Shaune kept his cool against a younger, fitter Victorian with a point to prove. We are talking about two very powerful men and you can almost feel the strength of the punches and kicks. Unfortunately it didn’t go Shaunes way but he assures me he is now hungry to win and doesn’t like the feeling of being beaten by a younger opponent.
Representing us in the Novice divisions were Adam Faulkner and Andreas Wortmann. Both fought extremely well considering it was their first time on the matts. Adam came second in the division to a stronger opponent but is certainly much better for the experience. Andreas deserves a huge wrap for this effort in the novice division having only been training with us a matter of months.
Well done to all our fighters – I was over the moon with the results and even more pleased with the personal performances.
Camp is next on the Calender – applications will be out this week.

08.10.09 - The big Clean up
Just a reminder that this Saturday after training we will be holding a working bee. The dojo is starting to look a bit worse for wear so if we could all hang around for about an hour (normal class will be cut short by 15 mins) so we can get the dojo back to its shiny self. The more hands we have the faster it will get done. I really can’t see why we can’t knock it over in 30 mins.
I hope to see you all there.

By the way.... there will also be lunch (pizza!) starting at around 11am at the dojo this Saturday after the cleanup. All are welcome! Come along and support the club!
01.10.09 - Farwell Shashini – as she heads back to Melbourne
I thought I would share the card that Shashini gave me last night before boarding her flight back to Melbourne. Shashini came to the Brisbane dojo just 4 months ago having previously trained in Geelong and after a 2 year break from training. She turned up regularly trained hard and took on board my comments and improved greatly. She finished her time here by grading to 5th kyu – great effort.
She promises to visit when she is next in town.

18.09.09 - T-Shirt Design
It is time to get some new t-shirts for the club! So I am calling on everyone to come up with some great t-shirt designs. I invite everyone to submit their design to kbweb@kyokushinbrisbane.com by 27th of September. I will then post the designs on the web and we can have a vote to see what everyone likes the best! From there I am hoping to take a pre-order and have t-shirts ready in time for the Australian Nationals in November!
16.09.09 - Sempai Mal returns to training
For those of you at training last Monday you would be aware that Sempai Mal is back at training. He is under strict instructions not to overdo things but its great to have him back. Between Sempai Mal and Sempai Jo, they have it covered and the two make a great team. I would like to thank all those who emailed me their well wishes for his speedy recovery – it certainly seems to have done the trick.

Shihan Nik Cujic has released the further information and application forms for this year's Australian Natioanl Full Contact and Kata Championships which are being help in Sydney on November 1st 2009.
Please find links below to application forms and information. Please discuss with Sensei Dom if you are interested in fighting or taking part in the kata.
Update 25.09.09 - Application forms are no longer avaiable on the internet. Please see one of the Senseis at training if you would like to fight in the tournament. No emails thank you.
04.09.09 - What an Event!!
As many of you would be aware I spent the week in Tokyo to be a part of the IKO World Weight tournament, the International Youth, Women’s and Veterans tournaments. A total of 1750 participants with 9 matts going at once. It was quite spectacular and finished with the World Weight tournament. I am still amazed at the organization behind such an event. Japan won the day with 3 out of the 4 winners being Japanese fighters. However its clear that the Russians, Bulgarians and Spanish are not far behind them. With only 8 hand chosen fighters in each division the competition was fast and furious and very evenly matched.

04.09.09 - IKO Seminar

Following the 3 day tournament I participated in the Seminar by Shihan Francisco Filho, Shihan Kiyama and Sensei Narushima. The day started at 9.30am with basics and ido geiko and then went on for another 5 hours. We finished at around 2.30pm and I must say I was completely spent. I went though 5 bottles of water due to the heat and hard training. I did come away with many new training ideas that I will be introducing to the dojo over time.
Overall I was extremely pleased with the trip.

31.08.09 - Tournament Fighting
Congratulations to both Luke and Peter for their efforts last weekend!
With the upcoming tournament in November now is a great time to start training hard for it. There will be Male, Female, Novice and Junior divisions so it is an excellent time to have a go at a tournament. Those of you who haven’t fought before, the novice division will be an great way to get started, with fighters wearing gloves and leg protection to minimise the chance of any injuries.
If you are interested in fighting at this tournament or a tournament in the future please let one of the Senseis know!”
27.08.09 - Congratulations Shonosuke!

Congratulations to Shonosuke Haraguchi placing second at the 5th International Youth Karate Tournament last weekend!
With 120 boys in his division it was a great achievement to place second. Shonosuke weighted only 32kg and some of the fighters in his division were much heavier. Once such fight was against a 63kg boy from Ukraine. Shonosuke defeated him none the less!
We look forward to seeing Shonosuke back at the Brisbane dojo soon!
24.08.09 - Congratulations World Weight Champions

Lightweight - Yuzo Suzuki (Japan)
Middleweight - Mori Zenjyuro (Japan)
Heavyweight - Kentaro Tanaka (Japan)
Super heavyweight - Mikhail Kozlov (Russia)

The finals of each weight division were outstanding with certainly one of the best matches of all time in the heavyweight. Alejandro Navarro against Kentaro Tanaka. The fight went to 2 extensions and was eventually decided by the amount of boards broken with Tanaka breaking 2 more boards that Navarro he was given the win.
Overall an excellent event - more news to come including news on how Shonosuke went in the youth division!

The application forms with all the relevant details will etc will be uploaded to the net in the next few days. Please make a note of the date and lets start working towards it. Fighters can be working on conditioning and putting together their combinations. You don’t wait to October to start preparing.
17.08.09 - Big Mal, down but not out
As you would all now be aware Sempai Mal was struck down with a heart attack last Monday. I went to visit him last Tuesday and he was certainly down in spirit but quite lucid and able to recount what happened.
He fortunately felt it coming, pulled into a Medical Centre and was rushed straight to the Royal Brisbane Hospital – ER. There he was given fast treatment and like all these conditions if fast treatment is received, he was able to be quickly stabilised. Of course he will be out of action for a few weeks but we can look forward to seeing his smiling face back in the dojo within around 6 weeks. I also passed on all of your well wishes – so thanks to all who emailed me “get well wishes”.
I will be taking Monday night class until further notice.

10.08.09 - Sempai Mal
I am sorry to have to say that Sempai Mal has had had a mild heart attack. However, he is ok as the doctors got to it very early.
It goes without saying that Sempai Mal is an integral part of the Kyokushin Brisbane dojo and any time spent away from the club he is sorely missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time and lets all hope for a speedy recovery!!!
What Sensei Dom would like to do is if you could email him (dom@kyokushinbrisbane.com) with your best wishes emails for Sempai Mal. Sensei Dominic will be going to visit Sempai Mal in the hospital Tuesday night so if you can send them through before that Sensei Dom can print them out and give them to Sempai Mal.
Monday night sessions will be taken by Sensei Dom until further notice.
23.07.09 - Begin your day with Yoga
This Saturday we will be starting the class with a 30 minute Yoga session. This is a great way to get the mind, body and soul working together. Karen Russell has kindly offered to take the session and if its anything like what she finished the session with last night, I expect it will be quite brisk!! I hope you can all make it. The final hour will be dedicated to pad work in the usual Sat morning style. Yoga is a fantastic complement to our style of high impact karate. It helps to rejuvenate the muscles and focuses on the breath to give a full body stretch before we attack the pads.

23.06.09 - IKO Membership Cards
The first batch membership cards have been done and will be out in the coming days. Unfortunately I am having some issues with the laminating machine but I am assured this will be sorted out shortly. For all those new members who have not provided a passport (2) sized photo could you please do so at your earliest convenience. As I am in catch up phase for this project I would like to have all new members registered by the end of July. All those members that have recently provided their passport photos please see me when your next at the dojo to receive your membership card.
IKO Website Resource
We are adding some extra information in relation to terminology for stances and weapons of the body. This update is to assist all members in preparing for their next grading and will have all the information you need in respect of your next level. I will be encouraging all members to tap into this resource to enable them to be better prepared for gradings. Of course the fitness component of a grading cannot be found on the website – you need to actually train hard for that!!
22.06.09 - Congratulations to Senpai Steven
Congratulations to Senpai Steven Cujic of the Sydney Dojo who placed 2nd to Krzysztof Habraszka of Poland at the 2009 All American Open in New York last weekend.
This is an amazing effort by Senpai Steven, with the All American Open being an open weight tournament that has been dominated by the brazilians in the past. Top finishers of this tournament such as Ewerton Teixeira, Eduardo Tanaka, and of course Glaube Feitosa in the past have gone on to achieve great results at the world stage.
This is a major boost for Senpai Steven's career. We wish him the best for the upcoming World Tournaments!
11.06.09 - June Grading
With the June grading only a few weeks off – June 27th 8.30am, those students who are considering doing this grading should be training hard and getting up to speed. You need to know your techniques without looking around. Please confirm with me if you are intending to grade. That way there is no confusion and I will go through the Kata you need.
Special Training this Saturday 13th June
Sensei Garry O'Neill will be coming in this Saturday to take us through our kicking paces. For those of you who were training Saturday last week you would know what to expect. It’s a great opportunity to see how these kicks should be executed. I hope to see you all there.
Membership cards
The process has begun and its great to see everyone coming in with there mug shots (passport photos). The dojo has purchased a laminating machine so the cards will be preserved for all time!! So if you have not provided two passport photos please do so at your earliest convenience. I hope to have all existing members cards done before the end of July.
The IKO Nationals
The nationals are set to be held sometime late October, early November. The reason is due to other tournaments in August and September that clash so the nationals has had to be pushed back. The tournament will be held in Sutherland, NSW under Shihan Nik Cujic. The date will be set in the next few weeks. Just gives us more time to prepare.
05.06.09 - Queen's Birthday - June 8th Public Holiday
Please be aware that there will be NO training on Monday June 8th due to the public holiday. This is in accordance with dojo policy.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a great long weekend.

19.05.09 - THE CIRCUIT NIGHT IS BACK!!

06.04.09 - Paul Briggs comes to the Brisbane Dojo
Well, as promised we had Paul Briggs come and take us through our boxing paces. I have been a big fan of Pauls and have followed his fighting career from an early age. Paul held the World Thai Kickboxing title and then continued his boxing career up until his recent retirement. He is one of Australia’s best fighters and when you listen to him, you realise how much experience he has. He shared his insights and personal experiences with us as we covered the different aspects of punching - most notable being his famous left hook, which he has knocked out 36 opponents with.
The session focussed on boxing fundamentals going through each punch, the stance and then finishing with shadow boxing. I think everyone who was there got a lot out of it and he really reinforced what we have been teaching for years.
This is the first of what I hope will be many sessions with him as I think he really only scratched the surface for us. Stay tuned to the Website for more sessions to come.
Next up for the Brisbane dojo is the Gold Coast State titles.
