It never ceases to amaze me how some students think they can get through a grading without knowing the terminology. This was probably the part that stood out the most on the day. Without dwelling on the negative, too many students are turning up with high expectations and insufficient knowledge to back it up. I can promise you if you don’t know your techniques you won’t get past blue belt!!

On a more positive note, both Margie and Adam came well prepared and gave solid responses to my barrage of questions in relation to technical aspects of the grading. For all those spectators that are intending on grading in the future that is the way we are going. The first hour will be dedicated to questions in relation to techniques eg what are you hitting/blocking, what part of the body you are hitting/blocking with and how its executed. This information is now more readily available and can be sourced on the website.

Bottom line is, if you don’t know your terminology you shouldn’t attempt the belt. Its time to knuckle down and start to study the martial arts and understand the techniques that are applicable to your next grade.

Overall it was pleasing to see the effort put in on the day. It’s always very encouraging to see the newer students stepping up to grade. I would like to congratulate each of Shorn, Andreas, Tim and in particular Andrew (at just 10 years of age) for getting off white belt.

Whats next

Next up for the dojo is a special training session to be held July 12th. This will be the second session with Paul Briggs – boxing fundamentals. Needless to say – Don’ miss it!!!
