Very pleasing to see the strong performance put in by all who participated in last weeks grading. Preparation is the key to success in these events and that means turning up to training at least 3 times per week. The stand out performance was Luke Leonard who graded to 1st Kyu. This is a very important step in the blackbelt journey as it gives you a taste of doing the 40 man kumite. By doing a 20 man kumite after 2 hours of moving basics (in ura) you certainly begin to comprehend the toughness required of a shodan grading.
Other good individual performances worth noting was Jason Rawlins (2nd Kyu) after a long spell due to injury and work commitments, as well as Peter Chiricosta who trains most nights and his technique has certainly come a long way.
My general comment for this grading is to do with the katas. A kata has three speeds, fast time (usually with a kiai), slow time (a 3 second count) and normal speed. Its up to each student to understand the speed and how the techniques should flow together, where the pauses are and when to kiai on techniques.
Our next event is the Qld State titles to be held at the Gold Coast – so training starts for that right now!!
